This Month's Topic:
Fighting For Our Children To Belong
An Arizona family has been standing up to their son’s school district for two years. Their son, who happens to have Down syndrome, was making progress while in his kindergarten class with support of a paraprofessional and some pull out to a special education resource room. In December of his kindergarten year, his parents were notified that he would have to change schools.
The district wanted him to be bussed to a different school, where he would be in a special education class for almost the entire school day. His parents believed this decision was made to save money. Their son is in second grade now; and, because of parental rights, he has remained in his neighborhood school while a final court decision is made. This case is now set to be heard in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Members and friends of TVDSA will have a chance to hear one of the family’s attorneys speak about the possible repercussions of this case for families in Idaho and other states across the country and how we can speak up for our children so they will be seen as competent learners and welcomed in their neighborhood schools
